Territorio de Zuguates means Land of the Strays. It is a non-profit animal shelter and rehabilitation center, founded by Lya Battle and Alvaro Saumet in 2006 for promoting well-being and respect for animals of all types with a particular focus toward the abandoned street dogs of San Jose. The center provides shelter for hundreds of unwanted dogs seeking a second opportunity through adoption, and also offering a more permanent home for those unfortunate dogs that probably will never find an adoptive family due to age, medical condition or other stigma not of their own making. Territorio de Zuguates is currently the sanctuary for 1,800 dogs!
